FAQs
What types of loans can I apply for?

We offer a full range of NZ loans, including personal loans ($1,000–$100,000), car loans, holiday loans, cash loans, debt consolidation loans ($1,000–$50,000), bridging finance, business finance, and second-mortgage loans. Each product comes with flexible terms to suit your needs.
How quickly can I get approved and paid out?

Our goal is to review your online application within 60 minutes. Once approved, funds are typically in your account within another hour—often the same day.
What documents do I need to apply?

You’ll need:
- Valid photo ID – NZ passport, driver’s licence, or firearms licence
- Proof of address – rates notice, tenancy agreement, utility bill
- Proof of income – 90-day bank statement & 2 payslips
- If you’re using collateral, we’ll also need documentation for that asset.
Can I repay my loan early without penalty?

Yes. You’re welcome to make extra repayments or settle your loan early—we don’t penalise you for paying down faster. Early repayment still saves you on interest, though standard early-settlement fees may apply to some products.
What happens if I miss a repayment?

If you miss a payment, we’ll notify you immediately. If default continues for 15 days, we may repossess collateral or pursue a court judgment to recover the balance. To avoid this, please contact us at 0800 21 21 21 as soon as you foresee any difficulty.

Yes, you need to be a permanent resident of NZ.
How is my credit rating decided?

When you apply to borrow money a Lender must carry out a credit check on you. There are three credit bureaus currently in NZ (Equifax, Centrix & Illion) and depending on which Lender uses who (and whether they use the quote system or not), any credit check will result in that company being displayed on your file, along with the date of the application and any other information supplied.
Multiple inquiries in short succession, many different living addresses with the last 3 years, bad debts, insolvency, court judgments, multiple names (aliases), can all negatively effect your credit score.
Comprehensive Credit Reporting (CCR) was introduced into NZ in 2012. CCR, or positive reporting allows for more information to be collected and reported on by credit reporters. In doing so, this creates a more balanced view of an individuals credit history. Type of account, Amount of credit, Status of Account, Credit Provider Details, and 24 months repayment history are all invaluable additions to the reporting system. Real Finance is a provider of, and a recipient of this type of credit data.
Repayment history data like this offers credit providers valuable insights into their customers’ credit behaviour. This information can alert credit providers to hardship or financial difficulty and ensure a customer isn’t further indebted without having sufficient capacity to repay financial commitments. Repayment history also gives consumers the ability to demonstrate they have rehabilitated their credit behaviour following an adverse event; for example, a clear repayment history over a period of up to 24 months after a payment default. This data may then allow the consumer to access quality credit at a more reasonable price without being penalised for a previous adverse event.
It is important to understand and take care of your credit score, and you can do this is a number of ways.
- Pay your debts on time. If you foresee a problem make early contact and reach a mutually agreed outcome, then stick with it.
- Be sure before you apply. When shopping around for finance (or other credit types such as hire purchases), check in advance whether those companies will check your credit or not, and whether it will be a quotation inquiry. Determine its the right fit for you before you apply.
- Be aware that moving address, utilities providers, or phone numbers often, can lead to a decreased credit rating.
- Be aware that multiple inquiries for credit can negatively impact your score, and show potential “credit distress”.
- Fix issues promptly. When you discover a problem, contact the supplier straight away to organise a solution to the problem
Must I have excellent credit?

No you don’t have to have excellent credit, but good credit helps.
What if I have bad credit?

If you have really bad credit, we may ask for you to provide a suitable guarantor or additional security.
What if I am currently in bankruptcy or nap (no asset procedure)?

You must disclose this to us at the time you apply for finance.
Can I repay the loan faster?

Yes! Unlike some companies,we don’t penalise you if you want to make higher repayments, and your full repayment is used to reduce your balance and calculate the interest that should be charged to your account.
Do you charge an early settlement fee?

We charge an early settlement fee on all Loan products except Short Term loans, but paying off quicker still saves you a lot in interest and administration fees (if applicable).
What is security/collateral?

Security (also called collateral) can be certain Household Chattels, Vehicles, Boats, Property etc, so long as it is owned in your name/s and is not on finance elsewhere (or will be paid off by the funds we lend you).
We cannot use essential items such as Washing Machines, Cooking Equipment, Beds, Clothing, Kids Toys etc – unless you are using the loan to buy the item brand new from the store.
What if I don’t repay the loan?

If you miss a loan repayment we’ll notify you straight away. If you stay in default for too long, then we’ll send you a pre-possession notice and after 15 days (if you still have not made contact), we’ll have to repossess any security and sell it to recover the loan’s balance, including the cost of any repossession expenses. If there is still a balance after that or if you did not use security to begin with, then we may take you to Court to obtain a judgment against you, and have your loan repaid via court order.
How can I avoid repossession and/or court?

The best way to avoid this is to simply make your repayments, but if you encounter any issues during the course of your loan, you should contact us on 0800 21 21 21 or via any other contact method outlined in your contract documentation as soon as possible.
What should I do if my details change?

If you change any details you should contact us straight away and provide any new information, along with any new phone numbers or other contact details.
Do you provide short term loans?

We believe we have a moral and ethical responsibility to remove high interest payday lending options from New Zealand. We will only consider “payday lending” to existing Real Finance clients in order to settle or avoid high interest lending elsewhere, or in a true emergency situation.
